anti~time

A spiral is like the bastard child of a straight line and a circle. It is a curved line created by a point that travels in a circular pattern, bound to orbit its point of origin without ever returning to it.

There is something cursed about it. Where the straight line is adventurous in its determination of moving forward in potentially any direction, and the circle is mystical in not having a beginning or an end, spirals have a whimsical aimlessness operating on a surplus of drive and a lack of destination. It is also a way to fit a lot into a small space.

Looking at the analogue wall clock hanging in the rec room of ward 81 - the women's security ward of the Oregon State Mental Institution in a 1979 photograph by Mary Ellen Mark - with patients dancing underneath it, I don't see a flat circle of increments that represent a measured out cycle of duration that starts over at the same point every twenty-four hours. I see an invisible spiral uncoiling an expanding past, gathering riches in a bottomless pit of memory continuously sliced from an uncalibrated future or 'thereness'.

Music sits atop this unfolding scene like weather. It is an agent of time that resists measuring it. The way we move affects what we think and how we feel and music can change how we move from the inside out. The music we listen to is like a clock we choose to feel time rather than keep it. Just turning our bodies to the right makes us feel different than turning to the left.

I wonder whether the experience of being is a form of anti~time because when we think about death there is nothing but time. The body as a temporary medium to experience it is gone and time becomes crushingly endless. In time then, music and death are opposites, bound together like the points at either end of a spiral.

LOVING CHARACTERS INTO GAS STATION SNACKSROUGH TRADE EDITIONS NO. 54by Sára Iványi and Katinka van Gorkumpublished by Rough Trade Books (2023)design by Office of Craig* ORDER NOW *In the early winter of 2019, Katinka van Gorkum and Sára Iványi met online after creating personal ads on a text-based dating app called Lex. Without knowing who the other person was or what they looked like, they started writing to each other on a daily basis. This exchange is presented here as a kind of un-edited textual performance in which the act of language functions under the most intense pressure—how can we perform our ‘selves’ only through the use of words? How do the negotiations of the early stages of friendship, romance, sexuality, hold up under these conditions? How does language itself?

CRUISING QUEERS WORKSHOP+PERFORMANCEby Sára Iványi, Katinka van Gorkum and Eddie Azulay

A Queer archive activation through writing, crafting and collective reading - hosted by KIOSK Rotterdam in 2024, and Porn Film Festival Amsterdam in 2025.

Sára Iványi, Katinka van Gorkum and Eddie Azulay are three writer~artists who became acquainted via the same queer dating app. Our collaboration for this workshop stems from our shared interest in language, and how reading between the lines and expressing oneself and one’s fantasies freely to strangers can become an interpersonal site for desire and sexuality - a site for cruising.

We invite participants to get creative with erotic queer archive material to craft smutty personal-ads on paper. Guided by Sára and Katinka, we will read together, write together, share fantasies, markers and glue sticks. Everyone can bring a word or a thing that they want to use in their personal ad – a talisman that speaks to their sexuality or desire. The aim is to create a ‘cruising wall’ that will display the finished personal ads on site where visitors can interact with them. Guided by Eddie, the second part of the workshop is an intimate collective reading session of an excerpt from a text written by Liz Rosenfeld.

By Esmee Geerken:
“How does self-organization shape the individual and collective human mind? Can we allow entropy and emergence in our collective thinking and how would this affect our building strategies and our ability to be part of the biosphere?

Prof. Dr. Brian Castellani, Sociology department, Durham University, UK and Psychiatry department, Northeast Ohio Medical University, US.Rethinking cognitive self-organisation – from cells to minds and society. For this talk, Brian will focus on the role cognitive self-organisation plays in our human lives – from the nonconscious cognition of our human cells and immune systems to our multiple levels of brain-based cognition to the social-ecological and cyber-technical cognitive systems in which we live.

Followed by Orion Maxted and the Interactions group with a collective mind performance.”

INTERACTIONS - ORACLE

03.04.2021 online performance and workshop by the Interactions Group for the Blend and Bleed online symposium

on Transreality and Pervasive Play

participants: Orion Maxted, Renske Vroomans, Izabelė Jonušaitė, Esmee Geerken, Enrico Sandro Collizzi, Sára Iványi, Mirko Lazović, and Andrew Wass

“The Wonder Machine,” a game that generates wonderment, derives from overlapping themes between art and science. In this compacted, systematized form of conversation, each agent speaks in turn, beginning with the phrase “I wonder…” to express their current state of curiosity. From this rhythmic expression of wonder and doubt, a web of connected intuitions emerges.

The Interactions is an transdisciplinary ‘thought band’ of roughly 20 artists, scientists and philosophers who together explore the weird and wonderful folds in the dimensions of all possible collective thought through playful experiments that distribute thinking across many people and embrace emergence at the level of the collective mind, to experience what new hybrid forms of thought may be generated by studying and intervening in multi-individual thinking networks, and collective human algorithms.

	INTERACTIONS - NEGATIVE POETRY
20.12.2020 online performance and exhibition at the

Museum of Science and Technology in Belgrade by Katarina Petrović

with the Interactions Group.performance participants: Orion Maxted,

Katarina Petrović, Renske Vroomans, Izabelė Jonušaitė, Enrico Sandro Collizzi, Sára Iványi,

Cadell Last, Marie Groothof and
Thomas Dudkiewicz.

Negative Poetry Human Algorithm is an online performance bridging collective thinking, theatre and complexity science, performed by a computer made of people who together tackle the complex task of transforming a poem into its opposite, thereby generating a potentially infinite combinatorial polyphony of possibilities.
The work is a collaboration between Katarina Petrović, Orion Maxted and The Interactions group. The Interactions group is a transdisciplinary ‘thought band’ of roughly 20 artists, scientists and philosophers who together explore the weird and wonderful folds in the dimensions of all possible collective thought through experiments in collective intelligence, complexity science, cybernetics and algorithmic theatre.

Negative Poetry is an experiment in language, part of an ongoing research into creative processes, language and the concept of Origin.
The work centers around the entanglement of matter and meaning by focusing on the intriguing and paradoxical concept of zero - that which is both something and nothing at the same time.
The term Negative Poetry is inspired by the mathematical concept of approaching zero through the concept of cancellation where -n and n result in 0. In calculus, if we want to find the value of an essentially indeterminate form - zero - we try to approximate it by finding its ‘nearby’ values. We can thus approach zero from positive and/or negative direction and the resulting limit of each equation approaches different infinities (∞ and-∞) as it gets closer and closer to 0.
The key question is can the same be applied to natural language?
Interactors
Orion Maxted (theatre maker/artscientist), Katarina Petrović (artscientist), Renske Vroomans (evolutionary biologist), Enrico Sandro Colizzi (evolutionary biologist), Izabelė Jonušaitė (philosopher), Sára Iványi (poet), Thomas Dudkiewicz (theatre maker), Marie Groothof (theatre maker) and Cadell Last (philosopher).
Programming and technical support by Keez Duyves (PIPSlab) and Jur de Vries.

support
The Interactions group is hosted and supported by the Institute for Advanced Study, University of Amsterdam (IAS).
Negative Poetry is an online research exhibition by Katarina Petrović, virtually hosted by the Museum of Science and Technology in Belgrade.NPHA is part of a larger research study by Katarina Petrović. To view the entire exhibition please visit negativepoetry.com.

An algorithmic performance means it is based on a set of rules rather than a fixed script, and therefore the performance is different every time it is performed. For this version of the Negative Poetry: Human Algorithm, we translated the following poem from +p to -p:

‘HER’ (black text on white) 198 pages / ‘HIM’ (white text on black) 56 pages, inkjet print on A4 biotop paper. Double cover back-to-back stack bound with metal pins. Published by Dark Editions (2022)
An antilipo and visual poem in two parts, HER | HIM consists of two growing lists of every English word I know containing each letter of the words ‘her’ or ‘him’.
Based on the idea that language is a parasitic or alien life form that uses us to propagate itself, as well as on the feedback loop between language and the self as territories of belonging and exile, the lists are an example of the curious (im)possibility of translation and the fragmented self that arises from it. The more languages one understands, the more elusive the reflection of the self in them becomes. I grew up speaking Hungarian and learned other languages after moving to the Netherlands at a young age. One of the things that struck me was the use of 'she' and 'he' in different languages. These pronouns do not exist in Hungarian, only a gender neutral third-person singular pronoun. These lists are a way to reflect on the self through words that belong to me, as well as questioning the dynamic and limits of belonging to words. While ‘her’ and ‘him’ hide in these words in English, they would be lost in the translation into any other language. The full set of prints can be read as poems, diptychs or images. Pages can be removed from the books and individually framed, hung, used.
